Then in the evening, enjoy a traditional Hawaiian lu’au. The cost for the lu’au will be $25 a person and will include kalua pig, lomi salmon, chicken long rice, rice, poi, and haupia. The traditional lu’au menu will be prepared by members of the ‘Ohana Kuali’i who were featured in this year’s Merrie Monarch special supplement in the Hawai’i Tribune Herald. There will be a great lineup of entertainers from our community and our special guest entertainer is Cyril Pahinui. The lu’au will be opened at 6:00 p.m. by the students of Ke Kula ‘O Nawahiokalani’opu’u, a Hawaiian medium school in Kea’au. The students from Nawahi will be lead by Kumu Ha’amauliola Aiona, the granddaughter of George and Pat Soper. Our emcee will be Pohai Montague-Mullins, a teacher at Nawahi, a disc jockey at KHBC Radio, and a Volcano resident. Kumu Hula Ab Valencia’s Halau Hula Kalehuaki’eki’eika’iu, a community favorite, will follow with kane and wahine dancers from our neighborhoods. Then Halau Kahikilaulani, a Merrie Monarch standout, under the guidance of Kumu Hula Rae Fonseca will provide lively numbers before Cyril Pahinui. A night of beautiful food and entertainment will be a wonderful ending for this cultural event.

Proceeds from the silent auction and the lu’au will go toward establishing a cultural education fund for Volcano. Educational activities will support the cultural perpetuation of practices, knowledge, and skills of our ancestors.
